Wishbone

2023, Charcoal and Pastel on Paper

44x30 inches

Wishbone-juliegrantz-drawing.jpg

Wishbone symbolizes Julie's desire for both herself as a woman, and as well as for all other women to have a voice within a culture that prefers for women to carry themselves calmly and silently.

This is the only piece of the body of work Dis/Armed that didn’t show at the Triton Museum, as it was invited to the prestigious de Young Open 2023. I am especially proud of how the narrative comes through in this particular drawing. My goal was to have two sisters—not twins—emoting intensely and quietly. Lots of planning an patience went into crafting this drawing. This two-times life-size piece took more than 200 hours to create.
