I am milk

While my intention isn’t to exclusively center this piece on motherhood, the representation of milk naturally steers us in that direction. I intend for the flood to represent the essence of nurturing that flows from women, and the complex cascade of duties and responsibilities that our society expects for women to bear. My intention for this symbolism is to encourage us to question ourselves about our own innate nature to nurture: How much of this nurturing comes naturally and what portions surprise, inundate or flood us. How do we navigate that flood? How much do we lose and what do we gain? Who do we become? How much of the desire to nurture lives within us? How much is demanded from us? What transformation awaits us as we emerge from the flood?

The contrast between our natural inclination to nurture and the expectations we face from outside forces forms a mix of different reactions, unique to each individual. This piece has pushed me to question, to reflection, and to endeavor to derive meaning from adversity.
